Instead, I moved to encouraging emulators to enforce this restriction by only assuming unheadered ROMs. The older tsukuyomi (UPS), upset (UPS) and (maybe?) bps patch tools did, but beat was meant to be a sort of generic patching tool that could work on any data, and I didn't want it doing magical things for the SNES.īecause then you could get into, "What about iNES headers? What happens if wrong header is present? Unfortunately, other patchers don't, so you'll have to either keep that unheadered ROM around, or switch to a platform Flips can run on.

So that's what I did Floating IPS removes (and restores) the headers prior to patching. It's currently standardized to always headered, we should keep that.īut if we're dropping IPS (especially in favor of a format that can detect being applied to wrong ROM), then the new patcher can be taught about headers and ensure only one kind of BPS ever appears. We can't fix the IPSes, they're too many and even if we can change our hacks, there are still other IPSes around and no way to detect if they're headered or not. Yes, of course it's made from headered ROMs, but unheadered ROMs and headered IPSes yields about one thread from confused newcomers per month, and if newcomers consistently trip up on the same thing, then we should fix that. Because the patch is made from unheadered ROMs.
